The Assumption Parish was founded by official proclomation of Bishop Denis Hurley on the 9th of March 1947. Up until that time the Catholic Community of the Umbilo and Glenwood areas fell part of the Emmanuel Cathedral Parish but attended Mass at the Christ the King Mission in Congella.
The first Mass celebrated (in what is now the current hall) was the Christmas Midnight Mass in 1950.
The new Church building was completed in 1962 and consecrated in 1980.  See Gallery  for pictures
